The Essentials of Executive Coaching

Executive coaching has become a mainstream practice within a number of international companies and many successful brands in South Africa. Executive coaches form an integral part of a variety of executive teams and departments, providing creative solutions and insights at multiple levels of an organisation. While the scope of executive coaching may vary from client to client, there are a few core functions that are applicable in most cases.

The essentials of executive coaching include:

  • Defining goals: The organisation’s mission statement may have a clear-cut vision, but these corporate goals and targets are often forgotten during the daily stresses and challenges of meeting deadlines and other operations within the business. On top of this – each department needs to have its own flexible goals and performance targets that are aligned with corporate values and objectives. In order to bring more depth to the value that each member of an organisation needs to bring to a team, executive coaches help companies reassess their goals, define new goals and create measurable targets and activities (k.p.a’s) that leaders can implement.
  • Overcoming bottlenecks: An employee may be struggling with specific bottlenecks in his or her position. While an obvious solution would be to ‘speak to your manager’ – what happens if the manager doesn’t have the answers? One of the benefits of executive coaching is that a coach helps you see specific problems you are experiencing in your position in perspective so that you can refocus on your targets and use your optimal potential.
  • Executive coaching is unforced and confidential: Executive coaches aren’t hired to point out problems – they are hired to provide creative solutions to your personal challenges and help you with the tools you need to develop your career. CEO’s and top level executives are not able to get objective advice from peers or employees, which is why it benefits them greatly to have frank discussions with an objective outsider such as an executive coach. You benefit from confidential discussions with an experienced executive coach by having a person that can give unbiased opinions and creates new perspectives on current problem areas.
