Business Process Reengineering
A Three-Day Course for Line or Staff Personnel Involved With Process Reengineering
Presented as an in company training course
Michael Hammer, president of Hammer & Co coined the term Business Process Reengineering. It gained prominence in a 1990 Harvard Business Review article by Hammer that stated, “Reengineering is the fundamental analysis and radical redesign of business processes to achieve dramatic improvements in critical measures of performance.” Because of Hammer’s information technology (IT) background he centred on IT as the driver of BPR. More recent efforts in BPR indicate that IT is not necessary the driving factor, but merely one possible facilitator for achieving dramatic results.
Over the years many approaches have been adopted to improvement including work study, O & M, restructuring, downsizing, etc., but the real benefits have been very limited.
BPR has been far more successful because it views a business as a whole series of interrelated processes and recognises that a single process can spread across many functional boundaries within the organisation. It aligns customer needs with organisational processes and strives at process design that result in cost reduction, productivity improvement, profitability, etc.
By the end of this programme delegates will….
Have an understanding of what processes are, the principles of reengineering and the steps necessary for a formal implementation approach to BPR. Through the use of exercises delegates will learn how to represent processes and process models and how to reengineer these. They will also learn how to implement the improvements successfully.
