Ability with Capability

Are you confusing Ability with Capability when assessing performance readiness of followers?

  • Ability is operationally defined as task specific knowledge, experience and skill. It is an assessment that speaks to the “here and now.” Is the individual in question, for the task identified, currently performing at a sustained and acceptable level?
  • Capability is defined as potential. It is possible, or even probable, that something might happen at some point in the future as long as a number of pieces fall into place.

Confusing capability with ability is a common challenge for leaders at all levels and across all industries.  When those leaders prematurely empower employees with the potential to perform, in circumstances that call for skill, the resultant effect could have a negative impact on the expected outcome affecting both leader and follower. It is a matter of too much too soon…

Our Situational Leadership® Building Leaders programme helps leaders to effectively overcome this challenge.

PECS wish you a wonderful festive season and prosperous 2019.
