Training Philosophy
Our approach to training and development is based on our Developing Organisational Competence™ Model (DOC™).
The DOC model is based on a few very powerful ideas and concepts that have passed the test of time and continue to be fundamental concepts in current models of organisation and management. The model applies to all types of organisations ? be they hierarchical, team based, matrix or project organisations ? or whatever other typology of organisations is used.
Developing Organisational Competence™
The model states the following:
- All organisations are socio-technical systems. This means that they have a human dimension consisting of the knowledge, skills and attitudes of the members of the organisation, and the pattern of interactions that develop between them. Organisations also have a technical or task dimension consisting of its goals and objectives; structures and systems; tasks and job functions.
- The human side of the organisation requires leadership to be effective while the task dimension requires management.
- Leadership is a set of social skills including the ability to understand human behaviour and to guide human effort, facilitate change in behaviour and to maintain desired behaviours.
- Management is a set of technical and functional skills including the ability to plan, organise and control tasks and activities through methods, techniques, policies and procedures.
- The human and task dimensions are interdependent and continuously interact with and influence one another. At the same time the organisation also interacts with a changing environment consisting of customers, competitors and stakeholders representing political, economic, social and technological trends.
- To deal effectively with these interdependent interactions requires a set of conceptual skills consisting of the ability to see the organisation as a whole; to develop and integrate a long-term perspective with the necessity of short-term realities and demands; to play the roles of leader and manager; and to continuously learn and adapt.
All of our training courses have been selected and developed to address one or more of the three essential competency areas.
